If you are looking for great seafood restaurants, there is no need because only one will always top the list. Ocean Basket has been a family favourite in several countries around the world, and now it is here in Britain too. While I can enjoy a helping of fish and chips from a local chippy, as a seafood fanatic, I sometimes crave the unique Mediterranean flavours of an Ocean Basket seafood meal.
Though there are undoubtedly many excellent places to enjoy fish in towns and cities across the UK, none of these are able to duplicate this world-famous international brand’s Greek-style cuisine and welcoming ambience.
The 180-mile trip from my home in Devon to my nearest Ocean Basket in Kingston upon Thames is well worth the journey to feast on the Full Deck Platter, with its prince prawns, mussels, grilled and fried tender calamari, and succulent Cape hake. Furthermore, the popularity of these restaurants, both there and at the Bromley branch, suggests that many others share my opinion that these are truly exceptional seafood restaurants.
The difference between “good” and “great” is more than just a grammatical distinction. Fish is good for you, but great fish is also delicious, and few people are more aware of how to create that difference than those who dwell on the mainland or island shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It is, therefore, not surprising that Ocean Basket owes its origin, distinctive character and mouthwatering cuisine to a Greek family seeking a new life in Pretoria, South Africa.
It was here that the Lazarides brothers opened the first Ocean Basket restaurant and Mediterranean deli in 1995 when seafood was still seen as a delicacy that was affordable only to the wealthy. Against all the odds, the tiny, six-table project with its limited but affordable fare became a success, destined to become a global empire of over 200 outlets and a 60% share of the world’s sit-down seafood market.
