History claims a young Jewish cook opened Britain’s first fish and chips shop in 1860. Now, two new seafood restaurants are transforming this simple dish. Located in Bromley and Kingston upon Thames, respectively, they mark the UK debut of an international restaurant chain loved by millions in 17 countries. These include Saudi Arabia, Cyprus, Kazakhstan, Mauritius and South Africa, the home of its founders.
Eating at an Ocean Basket restaurant offers diners more than just another fish and chip supper. It is an opportunity to enjoy seafood in the Mediterranean style and experience the legendary warmth of South African hospitality.
The briefest glance at our menu says it all. Naturally, we serve fish and chips, and you can even douse them in curry sauce. However, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing your fish. Of course, there is cod if you want it, but if you haven’t tasted Cape Hake, you are in for a special treat. You could also have haddock with your chips, but our pièce de rèsistance is a Panko and Paprika grilled Scottish salmon fillet in a creamy red pesto sauce, not something you’re likely to find at your local chippy.
Almost everyone loves this traditional British meal, and even the French and Belgians are into their pommes frites. However, not many people will be heading to the nearest chippy to treat their loved ones on Valentine’s Day or to celebrate a birthday or wedding anniversary. If you love seafood and are fortunate enough to live in or happen to be visiting the Outer London area, an evening at an Ocean Basket seafood restaurant in Kingston upon Thames or Bromley offers a unique and exclusive dining experience from which unforgettable memories are made.
Maybe you could start with our Greek-inspired fish soup, with its blend of tomato, garlic, parsley, dill and lemon. Our traditional village salad, which, among its other mouth-watering ingredients, includes black Kalamata olives, creamy feta cheese and origanum, is another way to enjoy the traditional flavours of Greece.
For an added touch of luxury, you can feast on fresh oysters with Lemon and Tabasco. Or perhaps, like the Greeks and South Africans, you can’t resist prawns or calamari. Order them individually or together. You can be confident they are of the highest quality and sourced exclusively from ethical and sustainable suppliers. As an expatriate South African, my personal favourite is undoubtedly Calamari 3 Ways. Ocean Basket restaurants offer a generous portion of grilled fried and cajun-spiced calamari that can be eaten alone or shared.
Dining at Ocean Basket is a family experience where you have time to chat, laugh, and enjoy yourself with nobody urging you to vacate your table. More importantly, it is somewhere you can bring your children and be sure your youngsters are well-catered for with a special menu of tasty delights, from fishy treats to halloumi bites, ice cream and soft drinks.
If your mouth is now watering, you’re thinking of fish and chips, and you’re a taxi ride from an Ocean Basket, click here to book a table and an unforgettable night out.
