The opening of a new family restaurant in Kingston upon Thames towards the end of 2022 marked the launch of a unique dining experience in the London Borough. While fish and chips are on its menu, this venue bears no resemblance to any ordinary fish-and-chip shop.
Rather than the traditional cod and hake trawled from the Atlantic Ocean and North Sea, the prawns, calamari and white fish on this restaurant’s menu originate from the warm waters surrounding the coast of Africa, and their superior taste and texture are evident. Furthermore, its seafood fully complies with the international regulations governing ethical and sustainable fishing.
However, regulations aside, the mouthwatering Mediterranean cuisine explains why our patrons keep coming back for more and why the global Ocean Basket brand has become a household name in 17 countries. The launch of the two UK franchises has pushed the total to over 200, serving more than 18 million people every year.
Although the first Ocean Basket restaurant opened in South Africa, its founders were a Greek immigrant family, and the menu continues to reveal their roots, as does the characteristic warm hospitality for which South African eateries are famous.
As in the tavernas of Greece and Cyprus and the bistros in Italy and other Mediterranean countries, mealtimes at an Ocean Basket restaurant are social occasions where families meet to share food, laughter, and love. Talk loudly or sing if you like. Here, mealtimes are intended to be fun times. Well, isn’t that what families most need today?
Fun times aside, this family restaurant in Kingston upon Thames has a menu to die for, including a range of dishes for sharing Mediterranean-style and some excellent wines for pairing. Just look at these seafood combos, platters and set menus:
For the family or a group of friends, there’s the scrumptious Family Platter with prawns, tender calamari and four portions of Cape hake. Alternatively, you might prefer the larger Full Deck Platter, which has extra prawns, grilled and fried calamari, and mussels. If you enjoy white fish, you may prefer the Sea Bream Platter in a mouthwatering herby lemon sauce, plus prawns and calamari.
