The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and are replete with tasty morsels to prepare a seafood platter fit for a king. Fortunately, you will not need to be of royal blood to sample these delicacies when you book a table at one of the two Mediterranean-style fish restaurants recently opened in the Bromley and Kingston upon Thames boroughs of Greater London.
All who inhabit the extensive coastline of the Mediterranean, from North Africa to Portugal and beyond, have learned to relish the sea’s harvest and have developed unique and flavoursome ways to cook it to perfection. Perhaps none have learned to do this better than the Greeks.
In 1961, Lefteri and Liza Lazarides and their two children said farewell to their native Greece to seek a new life in South Africa. Mama Liza also brought her culinary talents and her collection of personal recipes, which, with the help of sons Fats (Peter) and George, would become the cornerstones of the first Ocean Basket restaurant in Pretoria. The friendly family ambience, the typical Greek warm welcome, and the generous, mouthwatering Greek seafood platter proved a recipe for success that has since spread worldwide and, most recently, to the UK.
We understand that some are less adventurous than others and are happy to cater to their needs with a generous portion of Cape hake, cod or haddock and chips. However, we believe anyone dining with us for the first time needs to sample some succulent seafood dishes cooked the Greek way. The following are some of our choices.
This option might be the best choice for those with a more modest appetite, as all our portions tend to be more generous than average. Order this smaller dish with just three prince prawns, Cape hake and tender calamari to savour your introduction to our traditional Mediterranean flavours when sampling this delicious fish dish.
If you are a little hungrier, you will be rewarded with a medley of mussels, prince prawns, Cape hake, tender calamari and crispy calamari popcorn. The latter is prepared by coating squid rings or tentacles with tempura batter and frying them quickly in hot oil. The result is every bit as addictive as popcorn but a whole lot tastier. There are also two-person and four-person servings and a Full Deck Platter for large parties.
We suggest this for those with a hearty appetite. Even though it’s a substantial meal, it’s only 833 Kcal and contains only minimal amounts of saturated fat, cholesterol, and carbs. The four king prawns, generous portions of tender calamari, and flaky white Cape hake could be enough to feed two if you are sampling our seafood platters for the first time. However, we suspect you might be less willing to share next time.
All our fish products are of the highest quality and obtained exclusively from fisheries that maintain sustainable practices. When you dine at an Ocean Basket, you’re assured of plenty more fish in the sea. Why not book a table to give your family a special treat today?
